The History of Støberiet

At the large foundry, sizzling cast iron was transformed into everything from stable windows, agricultural machinery and manhole covers. However, it was especially L. Lange's beautiful stilovnes, meticulously decorated by artists and designers, made the foundry famous. Lange's iron foundry kept the fire alive for 134 years and through four generations before it ceased operations in 1984.

Although most of the foundry has since been demolished, the company’s beautiful administrative building has been renovated and designated a historic landmark. The Danhostel Svendborg hostel moved into the building in the late 1990s, and now it is not factory workers who pass through the building’s arched gates, but adventurous guests exploring Svendborg and the surrounding area.
The old foundry is now called STØBERIET – a conference and vacation center.

Over the years, a multitude of individuals, organizations, and companies have passed through its doors, and the building has hosted large parties, cozy gatherings, and countless conferences and courses. And even though a lot has happened since the large casting furnaces were hot, you can still sense the history of L. Lange’s foundry when you see the beautiful old windows of the administration building or the exposed ceiling beams.
