After the success of the past few years, Svendborg Theater has formed its own ballet company, Svendborg BalletTeater with Per Lundsgaard at the helm, which is now showing its second production. It has been named Love & War.
Choreographer and Bournonville expert Dinna Bjørn has put together a brand new program for Svendborg BalletTeater, featuring both well-known choreography from Bournonville's classics and rarely performed steps that have not been shown in Denmark for many years. It's a tribute to dance and the joy of life, and a unique opportunity to experience Bournonville's choreography up close.
The first act celebrates love - both the love between people and the love of dance. August Bournonville is the founder of the Danish ballet tradition, and his exuberant, playful choreography that looks so easy but is hugely demanding has fascinated audiences and dancers around the world.
The second act is the ballet War Letters, originally created in 2013 by the young British choreographer Christopher Marney for the renowned British company Ballet Black. Here, however, the work has been reworked for Svendborg BalletTeater's dancers.
The five-movement ballet explores the conditions of love during World War II and is based on the letters sent between soldiers on the war front and their loved ones back home. The story, which is still highly relevant, contains heartbreaking references that are relatable to the present day.
Create the perfect ballet experience by combining the performance with an overnight stay at Danhostel in Svendborg. Check into our modern rooms with private bathroom and toilet, enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the city's cozy restaurants, and you're ready for the ballet. Svendborg Theater is just a short walk from Danhostel.
When the show is over, you can end the evening with a drink in one of the city's cafés or pubs before retiring for a good night's sleep in our comfortable beds. The next morning, start the day with a delicious homemade breakfast buffet before checking out.
